3D vs 4D Plates – Which Is Better for Your Car?

Some people find it difficult to choose between 3D and 4D plates, but beyond their look, is there any benefits you can find over the other? Which one is the best option for your car?

In this blog, we will explore 3D and 4D plates – which is better for your car?

With a thriving aftermarket industry, it’s no secret that vehicle owners want the best for their vehicles, whether it’s making it look the way they want it and/or making upgrades. Either way, having peace of mind is the most important factor, this can only be provided by established and trusted service providers like GoTints!

How old are 4D and 3D plates?

3D number plates:

The specific inception of 3D number plates is hard to pinpoint, but is estimated to be around the mid to late 1990s, which is when they began to gain popularity.

The technology for the plate likely came from resin-based applications already used in some signage. They offered a departure from the standard flat, printed acrylic plates that were dominant at the time.

4D number plates:

4D number plates are a more recent development, gaining traction in the late 2010s. They became significantly more popular around 2020 and 2021, possibly boosted by e-commerce growth during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The term ‘4D’ emerged after ‘3D’ was already in use for the gel-domed plates.

Is a 3D or 4D plate the better option for your car?

Is a 3D or 4D plate the better option for your car?

Between 3D and 4D plates, there is not really a ‘better’ option, the main factor is your personal preference in terms of how the aesthetic speaks to you personally.

The only ‘benefit’ is that 3D plates hold a slightly higher level of durability over 4D plates. So if you drive off-road or live in a rural area with less developed roads, maybe a 3D plate would be a better option.

Here’s a deeper look into the differences between the two plates:

Appearance

3D number plates have a rounded, smooth and glossy appearance, standing out from a traditional number plate without it being too obvious.

Contrastingly, 4D number plates are more protruding, straighter edges and bolder characters, resulting in a significantly more noticeable plate with a modern touch. As an added bonus, 4D plates have a slighter better visibility due to the shadows created due to the more protruding characters.

Durability

3D plates, as mentioned previously, have a higher level of durability and flexibility as a result of the polyurethane resin used to create the plate. This also provides some protection from fading and weathering.

4D plates are more durable than a standard number plate to a degree, but not as much as a 3D plate. The characters have the potential to be chipped a little easier if damaged, due to the sharper edges. However, this is rare.

Cost

3D number plates are the cheaper option between the two, with 4D number plates carrying a slight premium due to the more complicated manufacturing process and more expensive materials.

How much can I legally customise my 3D/4D number plate?

How much can I legally customise my 3D/4D number plate?

A 3D/4D plate is already classed as a custom number plate, and due to the current number plating laws there are very few legal customisations you can make to a 3D/4D plate, which are:

  • You can choose to include a Union Jack, English, Scottish, or Welsh flag, along with the “UK” country code on the left side of the plate. For zero-emission vehicles, a green flash on the left is also required.
  • A plain, thin border in black, around the edge of the plate is generally acceptable, as long as it doesn’t obscure any mandatory markings or the registration itself.

Currently, you can not legally customise:

  • The font (it must be the standard Charles Wright font).
  • The size or spacing of the characters.
  • The colour of the characters (they must be solid black).
  • The background colour or add any patterns.
  • The reflectivity of the plate or characters.
  • The arrangement of the registration number.

Can I get a custom 3D or 4D private plate?

Yes. As long as you own the private plate and can provide the proof of ownership, you can purchase and use the 3D or 4D private plate. Legitimate plate providers will always ask for proof of ownership before creating your custom number plate.

However, the value of your private plate exists with the original, having a 3D/4D variant does not serve as the legitimate plate when it comes to selling. You should always keep the original plate somewhere safe if you aren’t using it.

Furthermore, if your ownership has expired and not been renewed, it is then illegal to use the plate, whether it’s the original or custom counterpart. Being caught using a plate that isn’t yours can result in fines, points, bans, and possibly more depending on the situation.
