Applying paint protection film (or PPF) is a trusted method when it comes to protecting your vehicle from some superficial damages. But what are the actual facts? Is PPF all encompassing? Or does everyone even need it?
In this blog, we hope to show you everything you need to know about paint protection film: Myths and facts you need to know.
With a thriving aftermarket industry, it’s no secret that vehicle owners want the best for their vehicles, whether it’s making it look the way they want it and/or making upgrades. Either way, having peace of mind is the most important factor, this can only be provided by established and trusted service providers like GoTints!
At GoTints, we pride ourselves on providing a variety of expert services for vehicle owners. This includes repair, customisation and personalisation! Our services include PPF, Privacy glass, vehicle wrapping, and car detailing,
Can paint protection film make my car more valuable?
Not exactly, although certain vehicles like classic cars can have a higher value as time goes on, generally paint protection film doesn’t make a car more valuable, it helps to preserve the value of the vehicle.
By preventing superficial scratches and accumulative dirt, a vehicle can definitely retain some resale value, although the exact amount can vary significantly between vehicles, condition, buyers and sellers respectively.
Can I sell a car with PPF on it?
Yes, in most cases you should be able to sell a vehicle that has PPF on it, though this is subject to the person you are selling it to. They may want to see the ‘true’ state of the vehicle without the PPF attached.
Can I apply PPF to a leased vehicle?
It is possible to apply PPF to a leased vehicle, however you must check with your lease provider first. This may include informing them what kind of PPF you want to apply, and from where.
In some cases, aftermarket applications may go against the lease agreement. In other cases, lease providers may want to ensure that the driver is visiting a certified and quality PPF applicator.
If applying PPF goes against your lease agreement, you may be required to remove it to continue driving the vehicle, or you could incur further costs.
Paint protection film: What is myth, and what is fact?
Myth: PPF is only for new or luxury cars.
Fact: It’s no secret that PPF can preserve the finish of a factory fresh vehicle, that doesn’t mean it’s exclusive to them. PPF is available to apply on almost any vehicle, of any time, or price. By doing this, you not only help to protect the older paintwork of your vehicle, but can also add a rejuvenated appearance to the vehicle.
That being said, if vehicles have significant damage such as deep dents on the body, PPF will likely not be able to be applied until such issues are corrected.
Myth : PPF will yellow or discolour over time.
Fact: This is especially true for older versions of PPF, regardless of PPF age or quality, over time, PPF can be prone to yellowing. This can occur through lacking maintenance steps such as not leaving the vehicle exposed to direct sunlight constantly, or not cleaning the PPF properly.
Myth : PPF installation is a DIY task.
Fact: Installing paint protection film can be done by yourself, though it generally isn’t recommended and if you don’t have the experience, tools, or space required. If the PPF isn’t installed properly, it can quickly lead to bubbling, poor adhesion, and more.
Professional installers have the experience to handle complex curves and contours, ensuring the film adheres correctly and provides optimal protection.
Myth : PPF affects the paint’s appearance.
Fact: PPF has the capacity to affect the appearance of a car’s paint, as there are alternative finishes available. Regular PPF can impact the paint’s appearance by enhancing it, making it appear more vibrant, clean, and glossy.
The method of application also comes into play, if PPF is applied unprofessionally, it can make the vehicle look ‘saggy’. Whereas, proper application is almost invisible as it is a thin layer once adhered to the car’s body.
Myth : PPF is a substitute for regular car maintenance.
Fact: Not at all, PPF is by no means a way to substitute regular maintenance of your vehicle. Although it does act as a light shield for your vehicle against superficial damage, it still requires regular but specific cleaning to keep the PPF in the best possible condition, allowing it to last longer.
Myth 6: PPF will peel or lift easily.
Fact: As long as the film is applied by a professional, and is of high quality, it will adhere to the vehicle. PPF will only peel/lift easily under the following conditions:
- It has been applied poorly
- The vehicle has been damaged since application
- The PPF is old
- The PPF is of low quality
- The PPF has not been maintained
- The PPF has been cleaned or in contact with aggravating chemicals
Myth 7: PPF interferes with vehicle maintenance (e.g., washing, waxing).
Fact: By ensuring the right chemicals and equipment is used (if cleaning yourself) or by visiting a car cleaning service that can clean vehicles with PPF, you will find that PPF doesn’t interfere at all with vehicle maintenance.
Myth 8: PPF damages the paint when removed.
Fact: This isn’t necessarily true, but can be an issue if the PPF is yanked off from the vehicle, rather than peeling it slowly whilst applying heat to loosen the film. If you don’t remove the PPF properly, it can potentially remove layers of paint or leave remnants of adhesive.
Myth 9: All paint protection films are the same quality.
Fact: There are significant differences in PPF quality, durability, clarity, self-healing properties, and ease of maintenance across brands. High-end films from reputable manufacturers offer superior performance and appearance, while cheaper alternatives may degrade quickly, yellow, or provide subpar protection.
Myth 10: PPF is indestructible.
Fact: While PPF provides excellent protection against stone chips, scratches, and stains, it’s not completely impervious to damage. Deep scratches, severe impacts, or sharp objects can still penetrate or tear the film. However, modern PPFs have ‘self-healing properties’ that can eliminate minor scratches and swirl marks when exposed to heat.
