What is the difference between privacy glass and window tints?
Privacy glass and window tints are terms that are sometimes used interchangeably (with exceptions). Depending on whom you ask, it could refer to a window tint, which is a layer of film that is applied onto windows to improve privacy, reduce glare, UV rays, and the car’s temperature in the sun.
On the other hand, privacy glass can also refer to a specialised form of glass that is simply darkened or tinted during manufacturing. This is a permanent tint that is integrated into the glass, as opposed to a separate film that can be applied, the glass can be made with metal oxides in the glass.
Are there other types of privacy glass?
Yes. There are some options of privacy glass that can provide privacy on-demand. Examples include:
- Electrochromic Glass: This uses electrical currents to alter the glass’s tint, providing on-demand privacy.
- Liquid Crystal Glass: Similar to electrochromic, this type uses liquid crystals to control transparency.
These are considered the upper-echelon of privacy glass, and is more often than note used in buildings as opposed to vehicles. That being said, there is a version of privacy glass that can be added to vehicles, but would come at a significant premium over options such as a window tint, due to the specialised installation method.
Moreover, an on-demand privacy glass will more likely than not be in violation of window tinting laws in the UK depending on where it is installed.
As a result, a window tint, and privacy glass for a vehicle should be installed by a professional service. This is the best way to maintain privacy in your vehicle without paying a large cost, and staying within the boundaries of the law.
How does privacy glass work?
The most common type of privacy glass is “switchable”. However, there is a version that can be applied to vehicles, which we will explain below:
PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal)
The key component is a film containing liquid crystals. This film is typically sandwiched between two layers of glass, this component is known as polymer dispersed liquid crystal.
These liquid crystals are tiny molecules that can change their orientation, which allows them to alter transparency. When there’s no electrical current applied, these crystals are randomly arranged, causing light to scatter as it passes through, making the glass appear frosted or opaque.
When an electrical current is applied, the liquid crystals align themselves. This allows light to pass straight through, making the glass transparent. With a simple switch, the glass can transition from clear to opaque and back again.
Is privacy glass stronger than a window tint?
Neither window tints nor privacy glass reinforce the durability of a window to a noticeable degree. Privacy glass may be thicker, but is still susceptible to cracking and shattering like any other window.
The same applies for window tints, a window can still crack and shatter if a window tint is already applied. However, the adhesion of the tint can help to prevent shattered glass from falling and spreading.
Can privacy glass be faulty?
Yes, privacy glass has the potential to malfunction, this is the result of being electrically operated. Here’s how:
1. Electrical Issues:
- Wiring problems: Loose connections, damaged wiring, or corrosion can disrupt the electrical flow to the PDLC film, preventing it from switching.
- Power supply: Issues with the power supply or control unit can also cause malfunctions.
- Circuit issues: Fuses or other circuit components can fail.
2. PDLC Film Damage:
- Delamination: The layers of the laminated glass can separate over time, especially in harsh environments.
- Moisture ingress: If moisture penetrates the PDLC film, it can damage the liquid crystals and cause them to malfunction.
- Physical damage: Impacts or scratches can damage the film, leading to areas that won’t switch properly.
- Degradation: Over extended periods of time, the PDLC film can degrade, which can cause it to stop working.
3. Control system malfunctions:
- Switch failure: The switch used to control the privacy glass can malfunction.
- Software glitching: In more advanced systems, software glitches can cause the glass to behave erratically.
4. Environmental factors:
- Extreme temperatures: Very high or very low temperatures can affect the performance of the liquid crystals.
- UV exposure: Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can degrade the PDLC film.
- Installation Issues:
- Incorrect Installation: Poor installation can be the cause of many of the above mentioned issues.
What are the considerations for window tints and privacy glass?
Starting with window tints, there are legal considerations to be conscious of before applying the tint, this changes with where the tint is placed on the vehicle. Front windows have restriction, rear windows have none. Here’s an explanation:
Considerations for window tints
- Visible light transmission (VLT):
- The core of the legal requirements revolves around VLT, which is the amount of light that can pass through the glass.
- Windscreen: Must allow at least 75% of light to pass through.
- Front side windows: Must allow at least 70% of light to pass through.
- Rear windows: There are no legal restrictions on the darkness of tint on rear windows.
- Regulations: These rules are set out in The Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986.
- Enforcement: Police and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) use light-measuring equipment to check compliance. Penalties can range from fines and points on your licence to prohibition notices that prevent you from driving the vehicle until the illegal tint is removed.
Privacy tint considerations
- Less stringent regulations: Generally, there are far fewer legal restrictions on using privacy glass for homes and businesses in the UK.
- Considerations:
- Listed buildings and conservation areas: If your property is in a conservation area or is a listed building, there may be restrictions on alterations to the exterior, including window tinting. Check with your local planning authority.
- Building regulations: In some cases, building regulations may apply concerning fire safety or other factors.
- Lease agreements: If you’re renting a property, your lease may contain clauses restricting window tinting.
